COMBERTON BEGINNERS WED 1 point perspective

Dear Combegs,
here is your ref for class.
Remember next week you'll be finding the vanishig point of this doorway scene, and just for extra fun, we'll be doing the same with other scenes and paintings also! You lucky people!
If you want to get a gold star from teacher, you can bring your own image in with the vanishing points you have discovered for yourselves! : )

See you next week!

Gilly

COMBERTON INTERMEDIATES WEDNESDAY 2 POINT PERSPECTIVE

Dear Combints, here is your reference for class,
Please remember the order in which you start drawing up a scene with 2 point perspective.
Draw your eye-line or horizon anywhere on your paper, preferably in the middle,

rough out the proportions of your subject based on your eye-line going through the most horizontal part of your image, which in this case is roughly the bottom bar of the window pane.

Transfer the angles of the outside perimeters of your scene to your paper, which in this case is the top beam and the join where the floorboards meet the bench, when you extend both these angles to the left, they should meet at the same point on your eye level line,

if they don't, make them, so that your drawing looks accurate, even though your angle measurements might be a bit out.

this is now your vanishing point 1.

rough out your drawing, and repeat the process to the right side, making sure that the angles of the book shelfs converge on the same point of the eye level line.

Tis is now vanishing point 2.

Good luck ; )

Well be finishing these off in the 1st half our or so of next week's class, then you will be drawing 2 point persp from life, with a box like object you bring in yourself, this could be a carriage clock, biscuit tin, jewellery box, tool box, anything you like as long as it's box shaped, ( cubed )

FLATFORD MILL PAINTING HOLIDAY 2014 15TH TO THE 18TH AUGUST

FLATFORD MILL PAINTING HOLIDAY 2014 15TH TO THE 18TH AUGUST

3 NIGHTS & 4 DAYS TEACHING AT FLATFORD MILL IN WILLY LOTS HOUSE AND THE MILL
£366.00 SOLE OCCUPANCY ACCOMMODATION FULL BOARD

£329.00 SHARED OCCUPANCY
£238.00 NON PAINTING PARTNER IN SHARED OCCUPANCY

LAST years painting holiday at flatford mill was the most terrific fun! I'd like to thank everyone who came for their wonderful fun and energetic company, it really made the holiday.
We had friday a.m till monday 4.p.m and I'd like to think we had a good mixture of painting and relaxation in and outdoors.
The theme of this painting holiday was creating mood through colour and application.

After spending friday afternoon painting at the mill and rowing trips down the river, ( Phil, now formally known as jackson rollocks ) and getting to know each other, we had a presentation on choosing  paintings which we felt suited the music I was playing,
( albeit quietly due to technical problems outside my control )
Here are some of the images, try to conjour up a piece of music in your mind that you think might suit these images

We had a day's painting in the studio at FM due to the waether being wet, we worked on a still life with strong shadows, and then on Sunday we went to Pin Mill on the River Orwell estuary, where we tried 2 different approaches of application and colour, from soft wet in wet, with secondary colours, to simple bold brush marks in primary colours.
f

Monday was not only a scorcher, it was also Bank holiday monday, here are Liz and Marita, braving the crowds of tourist outside the mill itself

Whilst others chose the parts of FM closed off to tourists

Below we can see the now infamous fairy ring of logs on the Island, where, after dinner
( and drinks! ) on sunday night, upon discovering we were the only group left on site, had a singsong, starting off with rondo's all joining in with 'London's burning' and other rondo songs, followed by reel dancing, when Colin to our delight burst into song, this is where Mel, upon mounting a log, toppled over in the most graceful topple any of us had ever seen

which was artistically capture by Liz on her iPad

We were all most relieved that Mel was not injured, nor that she spilled a drop of her wine ; )
The group beat a hasty retreat when songs from the sound of music started up, and we conglomerated in willy lots house before bed.

Here are some of the feedback comments from our fellow artist on our painting holiday.
Dear Gilly and her FLAT Friends,
I should like to add my biggest and best 'thank yous' to all of the folllowing:
To Gilly, for your sensitive and inspirational tutoring (and mentoring) To Phil and Colin, for your company and delicious selection of wines
To Liz, for your chats in the car and cartoon wizardry!
To Marita, for a little snippet of life in Sweden and all the little conversations we had over the 4 days
To Louise, Heather and Lucy, for a real understanding of life in the fast lane (i.e. The THURSDAY Class)
To Andy, for inspiring me to get fit, keep fit and eat healthily, although I am not wearing that lycra!
Finally to Willy Lott and Constable - I am so delighted I was able to take part in this fantastic experience.
Love and best wishes, Melx

A great souvenir of a great weekend.
Thanks to all of you (– especially you, Gilly, of course) for a very special workshop. I thought it would be good, but I never expected it to be THAT good. I’m looking forward to next year already.
In the meantime, see you at Dowcra’s.
Heather xx

Dear All,
Thank you so much for letting me join the course although i'm not a regular student. I thoroughly enjoyed it! What a beautiful place and lovely bunch of people – and a teacher who has struck that perfect balance between teaching principles of painting and hands-on advice and instruction AND allowing students to get on with their own paintings. Brilliant!!
The journey home was much easier with not much traffic at all. I consulted my diary straight away and discovered that 4th September is currently free, so please, Gillian, send me information about the workshop and if it is geographically and practically possible for me to come, I would love to do so.
All the best to everyone Marita
